Who We Are

The independent practioners of Southside Counseling Associates have unique backgrounds and many different experiences and roads behind them. They share, however, a singular belief in every person's right to find a way to not only get by, but thrive in life. Whether working individually or together, they use their diverse experiences to help clients find their voice and determine their own path.

Linda Heiden Childers, LCSW

Linda Childers is an individual therapist who pairs her dynamic energy with a gift of relating to clients to help them find their way.  She pairs a strong intuitive sense with unconditional positive regard to help clients feel comfortable and at ease to explore life choices and enact positive change.  Her strengths include helping clients uncover faulty thought patterns and discover new ways of thinking and being in the world. 

Linda has experience providing creative, collaborative and practical counseling with many different types of clients including adolescents, young adults, and mature adults.  She works well with many types of struggles including anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, self-discovery concerns, and more.

George Vesper Jr., LMHC, LAC

George, a graduate from Indiana University, has been a therapist for many years. His warm, accepting, creative, insightful and recovery focused therapy style encourages developing self-acceptance, the confidence for positive change and what's preventing that from happening.  With a holistic perspective, he feels comfortable incorporating spirituality in treatment upon request with a primary Christian perspective, but will work with all beliefs. Areas of expertise are Depression, Anxiety, Addictions, Trauma, Spirituality, Bereavement, Childhood Abuse, Men's and Relationship Issues, and more.

Karen Kennedy, LCSW

After twenty-five years consulting with Fortune 500 clients, Karen realized that what she valued most about her life and relationships would lead her to a new field of study and an entirely different calling.

Karen enjoys working with individuals and LGBT couples. She engenders trust through a spirit of partnership and compassionate honesty. Meshing her years of business experience with her social work training and newfound passion, Karen encourages a balance of reflective thought and purposeful action.

Nikki Batta, LCSW, LCAC

Nikki has worked with teens, adults, and older adults providing a range of mental health and addiction therapy since 2001.  Nikki enjoys "walking the journey" with her clients and works with individuals with a variety of struggles: bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, self esteem, adjustment issues (life transitions), codependency, substance abuse, and more.  

Nikki is very strengths-based and client-centered.  She sees the good in her clients and helps them identify their strengths which can bring new meaning and healing into their lives.  Nikki is eclectic, using a variety of frameworks including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy, Dialetical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Motivational Interviewing.

Nikki has received induction into the International Association of Healthcare Professionals as a "Top Social Worker".

Richard K. Payne, MA, LMHC
Rick has more than 12 years of experience working with individuals, children, and families. Among his areas of focus are ODD, ADHD, depression, anxiety and trauma.  Rick has experience working in psychiatric hospitals and school-based settings with at-risk youth.  With compassion and understanding, he works with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.

Andrea specializes in depression, life transitions, women's issues, sexuality issues, adolescents and young adults. She believes that her role is to help you achieve your maximum potential in mental health and happiness.

Kristen Williams, LCSW

Kristen has extensive experience providing individual and family therapy to individuals aged 12 and over. Her specialties include mood, thought, and personality disorders as well as substance abuse disorders. Kristen also works with children and adults diagnosed with intellectual disabilities, and issues related to trauma and life changes. Kristen uses a strengths-based, client-centered approach to help clients recognize their own innate strengths and resources. She sees herself as an agent for change and actively assists clients in achieving their treatment goals.

Kyle P. Stepler LMHC

 Kyle is a graduate of Ball State University with a passion for helping people be who they are in order to live a fulfilling life. His genuine nature as both a person and a therapist helps clients feel comfortable exploring the thoughts and emotions that first brought them to therapy. He enjoys using humor and metaphors to build a supportive relationship, helping clients better understand the hardships they are experiencing. He is passionate about theLGBT+ community especially in young adults and teenagers. He has experience working with depression,anxiety, self-esteem, cancer, grief, and healthy lifestyle changes.
